Bennett Architectural’s first visit to Manchester Central involved installing new facades, entrances and a large atrium rooflight to the former railway station.
What was once one of Manchester’s main railway terminals from 1880 to 1969 now required a new striking entrance and foyer where natural light would provide a bright and open welcome to the building.
Kawneer’s curtain walling and sloped glazing as well as Pilkington Planar bolted glass was used to compliment one of the largest construction arches in the UK.
After a glazing unit then popped at Manchester Central, which is now being used as an exhibition and conference centre, the head of estates called Bennett Architectural back to carry out an assessment on all of the old aluminium windows.
This resulted in the Facilities Management team carrying out a number of general maintenance jobs such as the replacement of a number of window handles on the building, as we were repeatedly called in due to the excellent quality of our service.
Additionally, we provided alterations to some of the internal glass within the building and advised how to best store the glass they were using for partitions between rooms.
The building has now been temporarily transformed into the NHS Nightingale Hospital North West to assist the efforts of the NHS in treating patients during the coronavirus pandemic.
The hospital briefly closed after the passing of the first wave of Covid-19 but reopened on October 28th, 2020 in preperation for treating patients during the second peak in cases.
